Spotlight on: Intersectionality

The INTERDEM Spotlights webinar series was initiated by the junior board members of INTERDM, Esther Gerritzen and Sara Laureen Bartels, to bring together INTERDEM and INTERDEM academy members to learn across career stages and disciplines, and is organized in collaboration with INTERDEM Academy, Fania Dassen and Caitlin Hibbs (see picture on the right).

The first spotlight webinar was provided by Prof Martina Roes from the DZNE Witten, Germany, lead of the Taskforce on Culture, Context, and Intersectionality. With over 40 attendees, the session was well attended and drew in both early- and mid-career as well as senior researchers from various European universities and countries. Prof Roes introduced intersectionality and related concepts such as health (care) disparities, social determinants, and the intersectional analysis, showcased ongoing efforts, and challenged attendees in breakout room using an online whiteboard (see picture below) and a group discussion to critically reflect on own projects and future ideas.

Overall the webinar was well-received. The evaluation form shows that people felt that the content was interesting, that there was a good level of interaction, and that two hours was a good duration. Some suggestions to improve future webinars include adding one extra short break and creating a few more opportunities for discussion. We will take these suggestions on board and we are already looking forward to the next one on the 8th of March, when the Methodology Taskforce will take the Spotlight!

If you missed the session and are interested to learn more about the topic, please request access to the recording directly via  interdem-masterclass@maastrichtuniversity.nl. To join the Taskforce (open for INTERDEM and INTERDEM Academy members), please contact Prof Roes direct: Martina.Roes@dzne.de
