In July 2026, the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) took place in London. For many members of INTERDEM and the INTERDEM Academy, this provided a wonderful opportunity to present their own research, but above all to meet one another and new people from the world of dementia research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the formal conference sessions, the many informal opportunities for interaction\u2014during coffee breaks, social activities, and spontaneous conversations\u2014were an important part of the AAIC experience. These moments created space for exchanging ideas, building relationships, and enjoying the sense of community that characterises INTERDEM. Of course, the week also coincided with the football World Cup, providing additional opportunities to come together outside the conference programme. Many will remember the excitement of watching England versus Norway together, while the match against Argentina, watched with a wonderful group of INTERDEM Academy members, was perhaps a little less enjoyable from a sporting perspective!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AAIC provided a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and showcase the inspiring work of the INTERDEM Academy in supporting early- and mid-career researchers within the dementia research community. The INTERDEM Academy Board, chaired by Dr Sara Laureen Bartels, presented a poster provided a comprehensive introduction to the Academy, detailing its aims, the opportunities and activities it offers, and how people can get involved and contribute. On the day of the poster exhibition, several INTERDEM Academy members were present at the poster stand throughout the day and attracted a great deal of interest \u2013 which no doubt helped to attract a few new Academy members. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Sara, who submitted and prepared the poster, as well as all the Academy (Board) members who were on hand to represent the Academy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The AAIC programme was packed with a wide variety of topics relating to biomarkers, diagnosis, numerous clinical applications and risk reduction. Intervention studies, of course, were once again a major focus \u2013 alongside FINGERS Latin America, the presentation of the main findings from FINGERS-NL is particularly worth mentioning. The study shows that even a low-intensity intervention can reduce the risk of dementia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, findings on the social determinants of dementia were presented, as well as public health frameworks for prevention. The topic of harmonised cognitive assessment protocols was also of particular relevance and might certainly be of interest to INTERDEM members or network projects as well. Other exciting topics included the risk of dementia in relation to women\u2019s health, with new findings on the menopause and the idea of viewing the menopause as a new framework for exploring the fundamentals of neurodegenerative disease in all brains. Furthermore \u2013 and how fitting \u2013 there was new evidence on heat and dementia (risk).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All in all, it was a packed week with lots of lovely interactions, some excellent and helpful input, plenty of informal chats in between, and beautiful evenings in good company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
